I collaborated with a friend to create a set of visuals for a film student's senior project. The film is called "The Jinxed", named after an Arabic proverb. The proverb goes "المتعوس متعوس ولو ركبه على راسه فانوس". In English, "A jinxed person will be jinxed even if you hang a lantern on his head," meaning that an unlucky person cannot escape their luck.
I was commissioned to create the color palette, typography, posters, and ending credits. There are two main key visuals, the lantern, and a cigarette, are combined in the movie posters. The colors are inspired by complex Arab tile work and are used to communicate the contrasting Arab and American identities of the protagonist.
I made sure to cross-reference with people who spoke Arabic to ensure that the typography and visuals were clear and the English translations of more complex cultural ideas were as accurate as possible. Since the film script is in Arabic, it is above English in the typographical hierarchy, even if the types are roughly the same size.
